Competitions

Larbert Loch Viewing Platform

In August 2012 GWS Architects won the Larbert Loch Design Competition to create a permanent viewing platform at Forth Valley Royal Hospital – a place for the enjoyment of patients, staff and visitors. The competition was organised by Architecture and Design Scotland, NHS Forth Valley and Forestry Commission Scotland in conjunction with Forest Products Research Institute to promote the creative use of timber in architecture and design.

The competition focuses on designing a fully accessible timber landmark structure with low-maintenance requirements and ease of components replacement.

Our proposal reflects an elemental form, similar to a boat house, designed to provide sheltered and open-air rest and viewing seating along its linear platform which fades organically as it enters the shoreline of the loch.
